A client dies and the practitioner inherits a sequence of decisions: what income belongs on the final 1040 versus the estate's 1041, who signs each return, what basis applies, whether to elect a fiscal year, whether to combine a revocable trust with the estate under §645, whether to file a 706 just to preserve portability. Mistakes are often uncorrectable — losses that die with the decedent, a missed §691(c) deduction, an IRD item on the wrong return, a closed portability election.

You will certainly get an earful from your client when they find out their Medicare premiums are going up. Is there anything you can do about it? This is called the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). We will review how IRMAA is computed and what we can do to help our clients manage their IRMAA amount. We will start with a bonus topic of the Social Security Fairness Act which was passed in January, 2025 which may affect some of your clients who can get retroactive Social Security benefits all the way back to 2024.

Health savings accounts can provide triple tax advantages which includes a tax deduction for contributing to an HSA, tax deferred growth of the funds in the HSA, and tax-free distributions when the funds are used for qualified medical expenses. The OBBBA also made some changes to HSAs, but unfortunately not all the proposed changes made it into the final version of OBBBA. Our clients will always have medical expenses in retirement and HSAs are one of the best ways to prepare for these costs. We will review the special once-in-a-lifetime distribution from an IRA to an HSA which would convert the taxable IRA to a tax-free HSA.
